Carnival marks 42nd plastic surgery for Brazilian model

BEIJING, Jan. 28 (Xinhuanet) -- To get ready for dancing nearly nude at the head of a 300-person drum corps during Rio de Janeiro's five-day Carnival blowout in February, Brazilian model Angela Bismarchi is having her 42nd cosmetic surgery — closing in on the Guinness World Record of 47 surgical procedures held by 52-year-old American Cindy Jackson.

"I always was vain,” Bismarchi, 36, acknowledges at the medical clinic near Rio where her plastic surgeon husband has operated on her 10 times. "And for carnival, you have to feel especially pretty. I consider myself quite timid. I'm just a little girl grown big."

Just days before Brazil's Feb. 2 to 6 carnival begins, Bismarchi will have nylon wires implanted in her eyes to give them an Asian slant, in line with this year's theme of her samba group, Porto da Pedra: the centennial of Japanese immigration to Brazil.

Bismarchi's passion for plastic surgery has made her a celebrity in this image-mad country, where even the poor get surgical enhancements on the installment plan. Brazilians see no shame in touching up their bodies, which are routinely exposed at carnival and flaunted on the beach in thong bikinis so tiny they're called "dental floss."

Born poor in Rio, Bismarchi had her first cosmetic surgery in 1992 after her daughter was born. She was just 21, but said she was depressed after nursing caused her breasts to sag. So she had them lifted, adored the results, and became so fascinated with cosmetic surgery that her next two husbands were plastic surgeons.

"I put in a prosthesis and loved it. I was beautiful and sensual again," Bismarchi said, a striking figure at 6 feet — taller in white high heels — with long blond hair flowing over her white minidress.

She first made headlines in 2000, when police tried to arrest her after she paraded partly nude with the Brazilian flag painted on her body.

A wardrobe malfunction at last year's carnival put Bismarchi back in the news — when her G-string broke and dangled from her waist, Porto da Pedra was threatened with a penalty for total nudity, forbidden under parade rules. But the resourceful Bismarchi hid from the judges behind the drum section, changed her tiny "sex cover" and finished the parade.

Today, Bismarchi promotes an exclusive line of sexy lingerie, gives beauty tips and responds to the 500 to 700 letters and e-mails she receives each day. To care for her famous figure, she does two and a half hours of exercise daily, takes dance lessons and spends hours tanning on the beach.

Britney Spears's new British boyfriend has approached UK papers with intimate pictures of the star, with a £500,000 price tag.

Birmingham-born Adnam Ghalib is based in LA, where he works for paparazzi picture agency Finalpixx. The agency was yesterday approaching British papers with pictures of Ghalib and Spears together, taken since she left the LA Cedars-Sinai hospital. She sensationally checked out of the hospital last Thursday after barricading herself into a room for three hours with her youngest son, Jayden James.

Once the troubled star checked herself out of the facility, the couple embarked on a three day trip to Santa Monica and Palm Springs to escape the press. It is during this trip that Ghalib took this series of photographs and videos, which sources claim are 'extremely intimate or even sexual.'

It is unconfirmed whether Britney has co-operated with the sale of the photos, or whether she is unaware that her new boyfriend is already trying to cash in on their relationship.

Time, helped by money, has been kind, but these women are impatient to land the grand prize for the next phase of their life: the aged rock star with a house in St Tropez, the financier with a chain of hotels - or, failing that, the French President.

How deliciously predictable it is for the newly divorced Nicolas Sarkozy, 52, to be caught on the arm of 39-year-old Carla Bruni this week at Disneyland Paris. Just as his interest in the exquisitely beautiful model-turned-folk star is all too easily imagined, so is the intrepid Bruni's in Sarko.

Bruni is part of a distinct clan of modern Madame Bovarys who never quite seem to reach the summit of their romantic ambitions.

They want fame, of course, and those who haven't inherited want the wealth - but most importantly they want "the lifestyle": the high-profile friends, the gilt-edged party invitations, the feigned political and artistic interests. Already Bruni has made a none-too-successful recording of herself declaiming poetry, no less.

Euro-WAGs such as Liz Hurley, Elle MacPherson and Caprice will always describe their modelling careers as "digressions", although quite what the main thread is remains to be seen. In their late thirties and early forties, these women are at the peak of their physical beauty - which is to say, just before its collapse.

They keep make-up to a minimum and never wear especially short skirts or display too much cleavage, opting for Prada by day and leopard-print dresses paired with Louboutins at night.

As for the men on their arms, scarcely a Euro-WAG exists without serial swordsmen such as Eric Clapton, Mick Jagger and Arpad Busson featuring in their back catalogues. But once these women get to a certain age, their taste in partners mysteriously changes.

Bruni used to be involved with Donald Trump. The Spanish model Inés Sastre did roughly the same circuit before her fling with the admittedly charming but "you'd-have-to-think-of-the-handbags" golfer Colin Montgomerie.

But with their short or medium-term beauty, they are obliged to be long-term strategists, and as such invest as much discipline in the supervision and conservation of their prime assets as a businessman does with his books.

They might have slight weight issues masquerading as wheat or lactose intolerances, they work out religiously, take herbal mood relaxants, but - unlike their footballing counterparts - they avoid alcohol at all costs.

Such discipline has come at the cost of their girlish sensuality, leaving them brittle and insecure, though without the impetuosity that is the enemy of any good business plan. When appearing in the glossies, they gush about their lives at just the right tempo.

"I'm someone who likes the shadows, serenity, tranquillity," pleaded Cécilia Sarkozy - ironically, the epitome of the Euro-WAG and one whose dalliances we shall doubtless soon have laid out in the British press. "I never felt fame or power was important when you are in love," blathered Bruni.

Is there anything wrong with pursuing successful men? No, success has always been sexy. Yet the Euro-WAGs aren't really about sex: they're about an insatiable Becky Sharp-style hunger for power and influence.

Luckily for them, that's also what the men they target are about, too, since they can get the sex anywhere. And so perhaps, in a cynical, self-interested way, there really is a meeting of minds - but they would describe it as an uncontrollable love affair.

Sarkozy's fling with Bruni might not last, and do no more than raise a passing titter.

But he is, after all, a president, with a grand strategy for the renewal of his country that could involve ferocious confrontations with vested interests, not to speak of being one of three Western males with a finger on a nuclear button, and it does nothing for your confidence in his judgment.

Irfan Khan: - Fashion Star has done the seemingly unthinkable in Mira Nair's AIDS-related film "Migration". He plays an unhappily married man in a secret anguished affair with another. The film was screened at the 38th International Film Festival of India (IFFI) and also on TV for World AIDS Day.
Ranbir Kapoor:- Play gay? Why not? I'd love to play any character that takes me into unexplored parts of my psyche. But first let me serenade all these lovely ladies in our movies.
Akshaye Khanna:- It would depend entirely on the script.
Manoj Bajpai:- I'd love to play a gay character if it's written well and it's part of a very good script.
Vinay Pathak:- The excitement of portraying any character lies in the strength of the character's graph and progression vis-a-vis the plot and its conflicts. How a character helps a narrative grow is what interests me the most. The cast's sexual orientation and other factors are all secondary.
Rohit Roy:- Playing gay? I don't mind at all. But it depends on the film and its director's intentions and most importantly how his sexual preference affects the film and his character. If homosexuality is intrinsic to the narrative and the director possesses the sensibilities of Mira Nair or Aparna Sen, I'd surely play gay. But I'd never play gay to titillate senseless mirth or to ridicule the gay community. My character's sexuality would have to drive the choices he makes in life, which in turn takes the picture forward.
