If you love manga, anime, fashion or photography -or happen to be fluent in Japanese- then Kinokuniya Bookstore across from Bryant Park is a must. It has been a favorite place for me to go between shows during fashion week in the past but now that FW is moving to Lincoln Center I need to find other times to go there. I was there yesterday and saw this boy. I love how the bottom of his pants remind me of long underwear and his topknot. A look to steal.

AARYA 2 is a much hyped movie and is said to be a preceded by 2004 movie ‘AARYA’.

Kunhjimalu (Arachana) and Sharothe Ammini arrive there daily to offer prayers . There was a belief among the people that, if anyone offers special prayer to the deity at this temple, a blue lotus will bloom in the pond near the temple. Kunhjimalu was Appukkuttan's uncle's daughter.

One day Kunhjimalu was brought to Kizhakumbattu Malukutty Amma's house to do household work by Appu Kuttan (Suresh). Haridas (Kamlesh) who was the only son of Kizhakumbattu family. He returned home after completing higher studies. Later he fell in love with house maid Kunhji Malu.

PREVIEW:
Yesteryears Malayalam films were affluent in their scripts, relevant to social and cultural life of that time. Compared to the other film industries in India, Mollywood always hesitated to remake those classics. Now ace director Lal Jose is creating history by making Neelathamara (The Blue Lotus), one of the beautiful movies ever in Malayalam cinema, bloom again. It should be noteworthy that the movie is coming back after 30 years of its release in a new style and with a new cast. In 1979, the original movie directed by Yousafali Kecheri was penned by legendary writer M.T Vasudevan Nair. Now MT has made some periodical modifications in the story keeping in mind today’s audiences.

Neelathaamara is a story of two generations. Kunjimalu, a 16 year old village girl is an naive servant of Kizhakepattu house, a well known ancestral home. The movie blurts out the romance nestled in her heart for the land lord's son Haridas. Haridas is a rough and tough guy who has returned home after his higher studies. Kunjimalu had heard a lot about Haridas from his mother so she keeps that respect and keeps away, even trying to hide from Hari's eye sight. But she cannot continue that for long and slowly a romance blossoms between Kunjimalu and Haridas.

Most of the cast are newcomers, including Archana Kavi who portrays the role of Kunjimalu played by Ambika in the original version and Kamlesh who will step into the role played by Ravikumar. Suresh Nair, another debutant, will be seen as Appukkuttan, the character that Sattar did in the original. Also in the cast are Samvrutha Sunil, Reema Kallingal and Sreedevi Unni. G.Suresh Kumar is producing the film, under the banner of Revathi Kalamandhir. Vijay Ulaknath will wield the camera. Music is scored by Vidya Sagar for Vayalar Shartchandra Varma's lyrics. The movie is slated for release in October.

Kappal Muthalaali Movie Review

Kappal Muthalaali movie is about a central government employee Thulaseedharan (Ramesh Pisharady) who is son of an employee in a passport office. The father died while at office. Later Thulaseedharan got the job of father by the consideration of die in harness. But to clear his debt, Thulasi decided to take voluntary retirement.

From the amount he received from voluntary retirement, he bought a plot for building a resort. Nearer to his new plot was the house of Gulf Chandi (Jagathy Sreekumar). Chandi has no children and he loved his car like his own child. After buying the plot Thulaseedaran built compound wall for the property. This wall blocked the entry to Chandi’s house. Due to this issue Thulasi and Chandi became enemies.

When the resort’s work was in progress the workers got the remains of an old ship. The archeology department notified this place heritage. As he knew his effort to build a resort in that property will become futile, he decided to sell the plot. He approached Chandi for the purpose.
Kappal Muthalali’ is said to be comedy movie, directed by the comedy specialist Thaha. All the lead roles in this movie are played by newcomers. The film will be produced by Rameez Raja and Mummy Century under the banner Century Vision. Thaha is a successful director, since his debut and very good at slapstick comedies. This film will also be a successful one like his other movies. Sarayu, a degree student from Eranakulam has made an excellent performance, and could not be told as a debutant. Thus it is fortunate that she got a lead role in this movie. Ramesh Pisharodi will play the hero, who debuted in the movie ‘Positive’. He is good at comedy roles which he had already proved in his previous movie. The movie is carried with hilarious comedy, with Mukesh, Jagathy, Thilakan, Jagadeesh, Salim Kumar, Suraj, Mamu Koya, Kaviyoor Ponnamma and many others.

The director who specialises in making Slapstick comedies Thaha is back to business with the new movie titled as ‘Kappal Muthalali’. Featuring popular television and stage star Ramesh Pisharaady as the hero, the movie will give space to Sarayu to play the female lead of the movie. Ramesh Pisharaady, a great timer of comedy debuted into cinema with an important role in V K Prakash’s ‘Positive’, which sadly went unnoted.

Apart from its relatively fresh lead stars Thaha will support the cast with big names like Mukesh, Jagadheesh, Suraj Venjaaramoodu, Jagathy Sreekumar, Jaffer Idukky, Biju Kuttan, Salimkumar, and Bheeman Reghu. This hilarious movie which is continuing with its shoot at Perumbavoor will be cinematographed by Shamdut.

Thaha had been successful in creating slapstick from the very beginning of his career with hit films like ‘Mookilla Rajyathu’, Varabhalam and Ee Parakkum Thalika. But of late, his movies like ‘Hailasa’ and ‘Thekkaekara’ super fast didn’t yield the expected results at the Box Office.

Movie Review Gokula Kannada

GOKULA Cast & Crew
Director: Prakash Producer: Thashvini Prakash Music Director: Mano Murthy
Release Date: 27 Nov 2009
Genre: Family
Language: Kannada

The Story : Gokula movie revolves around four orphans who leave the orphanage and get adjusted to life. Vijay Raghavendra and Pooja Gandhi are in lead roles. Vijay and Yash Plays the role of orphans while Pooja plays the role of a medical student.

The renovated cinema hall bears a new name and looks roomy and clean. Ditto ‘Gokula’, Prakash’s offering after ‘Vamshi’. It has room for action, sentiment and humour while appearing clean, at first.Prakash provides engaging fare, with superb support from M S Ramesh in the first half. Inspirations and influences do not matter mainly due to the dialogues, which are crisp and mercifully, not overdone.

The story moves on smoothly and it is to the director’s credit that it appears credible. The situations are neither contrived nor melodramatic, except perhaps the climax, which drags a bit, but is saved by Ramesh’s dialogues again. His casting is also spot on. A restrained Vijay makes minimum use of his mannerisms, allowing others, particularly Yash, to upstage him. Pavan Kumar and Raghuraj provide perfect foil, one restraining himself and the other, earnest. Pooja Gandhi could have done without flaunting her body – her hair and warm smile do the job for her. Nakshatra makes a confident debut, but is let down by the length and incomplete characterisation of her role.

Srinivasamurthy and Sumithra as the couple yearning for their dead son lend that touch of dignity that is slowly vanishing from the screens today. Manomurthy and Satya Hegde complement each other. ‘Gokula’ makes subtle use of motifs – Mathura orphanage to the bungalow Gokula.

The theme of filial love, in that sense, has been given mature treatment. Likewise, the costume design deserves mention for being meticulous and not spoiling the continuity of each character.
Choreography is good too – Ragini is stylish, not giving enough reason to support the ‘item number’ controversy. Time to head to Gokula now.

Naan Avan illai Tamil Movie Review 2009

Director: Selva Producer: Hitesh Jabak Music Director: D. Imman
Release Date: 27 Nov 2009
Genre: Action - Romance
Language: Tamil
Certification: A

When the original Tamil movie Naan Avan Illai (I'm Not Him) released decades ago, with a cherubic looking Gemini Ganesan denying his affairs until he was blue in the face, the movie attained some sort of cult status for its witty dialogues, intriguing screenplay and the complete change of image for the actor.

Its remake tasted similar success, which is why the makers, Jhabak Movies, have decided to repeat the formula in the form of Naan Avan Illai -- 2, directed by Selva, with essentially the same team as before. Though Jeevan is the lead, the whole battalion of heroines has changed.

With D Imman scoring the music, here's what the album has to offer:
First up is what seems to be the hero's introduction song Manmadha Leelai with specially remixed lines from Manmadha Leelai, given a classical twist by Nithyashree, Shailhada and Ben G. M K Thyagaraja's version mingles with rap, shifting instantly to pop. Despite having familiar tones, it doesn't sound all that bad chiefly because of the Naan Avanillai refrain. Pa Vijay's lyrics list out this movie's casanova's many merits and "virtues" which translate cleverly to the chorus, and end, in a rather hilarious fashion, with the "Rambha [ Images ]…" dialogue.

Neha Bhasin begins Thooyavaney in a sensuous fashion accompanied by guitar strings; Vivega's lyrics are the mandatory romantic lines but the song, though inspired heavily by some Harris Jeyaraj numbers, is mildly appealing. It keeps to a steady pace; Neha's voice is pitched well and the faintly Braveheart-esque tones are pleasant. A familiar, but nevertheless charming piece.

Southern Aroma, a short track, begins with a heavy blast of percussion that ranges anywhere from synthesized energy to folksy instruments. After that, it shifts, predictably, to kuthu rhythm.

After the quite passable numbers, Naangu Kangal descends back to Imman's trademark rhythms and notes despite Javed Ali and Shreya Ghoshal [ Images ] trying to revive it with their dexterous voices. Pa Vijay's words follow the set patterns of romantic numbers; all about honey, hearts, souls and eternal bonding.

The next number has been penned by Vaali and comedian Mayilsami makes a play by talking about repeating his numbers; rendered by Jyotsna, and the deep voice of D Imaan. True to the opening lines of O Mariya, the song's been fleshed out with a heavy Latino beat that mutates into synthesized mish-mash, borrowing lyrics very liberally from a dozen romantic songs. It's actually interesting though not intriguing from a melodious point of view but the lyrics are entertaining, especially as they're all Vaali's words.

Yugabharathi's typically syrupy words begin Sollamaley, sung by Sadhana Sargam who tries valiantly to transform a mediocre song into something that approaching interesting. She succeeds once or twice but otherwise, it's pretty run-of-the-mill.

Udit Narayan is back with Suvi to render Baaga Unnaara, written by Vivega and in completely kuthu fashion. This one is meant for the front-benchers.
Naan Avan Illai -- 2 is a collection of kuthu songs and would-be enthusiastic tunes but it has a couple of numbers that snag your attention and make it worth a listen.

De Dana Dan Hindi Movie Review

De Dana Dan Movie Review
Director: Priyadarshan
Cast: Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty, Paresh Rawal, Katrina Kaif, Sameera Reddy
Rating: 2.5

De Dana Dan almost marks a decade of the end of the sensitivity and sensibility of director Priyadarshan who switched on to commercially driven comedy capers post the success of Hera Pheri . De Dana Dan also almost marks a decade of the widespread acceptability that the slapstick genre has gained in scarcity of sane comedies.

Going by its casting, do not expect De Dana Dan to be a sequel, tribute or extension of the Hera Pheri series. Forget the threesome chemistry, there is hardly a single frame in the film where the trio of Akshay Kumar, Sunil Shetty and Paresh Rawal share screen space. Except of course for the trademark Priyadarshan style chaotic climax where again their chemistry is diluted (literally through flooding fuss) as the entire cast joins them for more commotion.

Nitin Bankar (Akshay Kumar) is a driver under debt and Ram Mishra (Sunil Shetty) is a courier boy who hasn’t delivered much in life. Though both have already assigned girlfriends (Katrina, Sameera) for them, the film still takes too long to come to point. Money is the need of the hour and so Priyadarshan does some hera pheri in the story – which means a kidnap. Just this time the duo kidnaps a canine and you wonder if the film is going to the dogs.

As you try to keep a count on the ever-increasing character artists, the entire cast checks-in a five star hotel. Soon the story takes the shape of the 1992 Hollywood flick ‘ Blame it on the Bellboy ’ which was remade in Bollywood just a year ago as ‘ One Two Three ’ (and also starred Sunil Shetty and Sameera Reddy). A comedy of errors ensues with characters doing Bhagam Bhag throughout the hotel.

Call it a ‘wardrobe’ disaster but Akshay Kumar is locked in one for practically an hour of the film’s runtime. With a seemingly lost Sunil Shetty and a screeching loud Paresh Rawal, it’s left up to the character artists to save the ship. But a flood is induced in the climax as the director seeks inspiration from another Hollywood flick ‘ The Towering Inferno ’ (1974) with each character going down the drain.

But a flood is induced in the climax as the director seeks inspiration from another Hollywood flick ‘ The Towering Inferno ’ (1974) with each character going down the drain.

Following the characters' introductions there is nowhere for this story to go as Campion relies solely on the poetry of Keats to sell the film's emotional core. Whether Keats and Brawne are finishing each other's sentences or simply reciting poetry aloud over long walks in the forest, the sap from this material is murky and deep and turned me off completely. The final hour of this two-hour dramaturgy had me looking at my watch every 5-10 minutes, anxious for it all to end. I haven't experienced a romance that annoyed me this much since 2004's The Notebook, and I would even say that mess of a film would be more welcome at this point.
Much has been made about Cornish's performance as Fanny Brawne and she was perfectly fine in my opinion, but nothing to write home about. Then again, that may be because seeing her crying in the corner while surrounded by dead butterflies was just too much for me to handle. Ben Whishaw as Keats is also gaining attention, but to say his quiet performance is anything more than slightly above average is a drastic exaggeration.

Debutant director Prabhu Srinivas who is an established dance choreographer in South cinema has come out with Jeeva, a Kannada film which has been largely inspired by a couple of Hollywood and Korean thrillers.

He seems to have made a montage borrowed from some of the most thrilling sequences from non-Kannada films to make up for an under worked script which has way too many loop holes.
Though the thrills are effective, the love story is tedious and tests your patience till the last few sequences.
Jeeva is a pampered and irresponsible college student who falls for Janaki, a middle class girl. Janaki dislikes Jeeva's brashness and rejects him initially. Jeeva's much respected politician father is also insulted by Janaki. Finally Janaki decides to marry Jeeva, but gets a shock when her lover rejects her. Jeeva starts behaving in a peculiar fashion and loses all his friends and well wishers. Why he behaves so forms the rest of the story.
The story lacks any fresh elements. The confusion created in a hospital through exchange of medical reports does not come as a surprise element in the film as it has already been seen in Kannada films like Anuraagadha Alegalu directed by S Narayan which was released in 1993. The same element is seen in many successful non-Kannada films including Telugu film industry's legendary actor Akkineni Nageshwara Rao's block buster film Premabhishekham.

Prabhu Srinivas narrates the story with the proceedings leading to one twist after another. Rather than engaging the audience, these sequences drag for ever.

Except for the last thirty minutes where the film gains some momentum, the whole venture is loosely narrated with drab sequences. The so called comedy sequences in the earlier part of the film look too amateurish. Though he has been backed well by competent music director like Guru Kiran -- the melodious number Summane Yaake Bandhe haunts long after the film is over -- and a talented cinematographer like Sabha Kumar, the director has not made any attempts to narrate his film in an effective manner.

Prajwal Devaraj makes a serious effort to portray his character well. Certainly this film is the best in his career so far. Newbie actress Ruthwa looks good on screen and has potential. Veteran artists Chandrashekhar and Gurudatt have acted well.
Watch Jeeva for Prajwal's neat performance and Guru Kiran's music.

Gokula Music Review Kanada Movie 2009

People say Mano Murthy’s songs take time to grow on you; not necessarily, if you listen to the songs of Gokula. Some songs make an impression early on, and some fail miserably; either way, you will have an instant opinion. The music lacks the oomph Mano Murthy normally packs into his compositions; that ’something is missing’ feeling refuses to go away.

This album can be a good case study for ‘the effect of lyrics on the listenability of a song’. Music director and singers being constants, the words make all the difference. While Jayanth Kaikini’s words have loads of depth, meaning and manage to strike a chord, Dhananjaya’s lines sound rather hollow and haphazard. The Kaikini-Sonu combo rallies hard towards the finish line, but Mano Murthy (almost) succeeds in pulling them down.

Baruve Odi Odi (Karthik, Ritisha): A fun filled love song. Karthik and Rishita add a lot of life, and maintain the feel good factor throughout. Sprinkled with impromptu rap gigs at various parts, this song is bound to make you smile.

Aaramaage Idde naanu (Sonu Nigam, Shreya Goshal): It has all the ingredients of a good song, but the package sounds remarkably average. You can’t stop that ‘something is missing’ feeling when you hear it. Considering the quality of individual efforts, this song is a failure as a whole.
One By Two Jeevana (Tippu): Song to Avoid- No.1. The instrumental part starts off promisingly, but the lyrics and singing kill whatever build-up it achieved. Song wanders off aimlessly, and one tends to wonder where did it go wrong.

Maja Maadoke (Karthik, Ritisha): A party number no one would dance to. Lyrics are, again, the culprits, but music sounds a bit bland too. Singers who sounded so good in ‘Baruve odi Odi’ are surprisingly placid in this composition.

Neene Helu Nannadaavudu (Sonu Nigam): Soulful lyrics, soothing music, and excellent vocals. Need we say more? No one could have done justice to this song except for Sonu Nigam. You can feel the pain in the voice, and the guitar strumming in the background makes those hidden emotions come out exceptionally well.

Aaramaage Idde naanu- Remix (Sonu Nigam, Shreya Goshal): Remixes normally tend to be faster versions of their slower counterparts, with few beats added in; and most of the time, they degrade the original composition. This song is no exception to this trend.
Final verdict: Mano Murthy could have strung the individual performances together in a better way. This looks like an average effort, full of tracks which people will listen to for a few days, and move on to the next mediocre stuff. The team was exceptional, but the captain was off his best.

Sari gets a sexy makeover

India's traditional six-yard wonder is igniting imaginations anew. The sari, say fashion designers, can be worn over a pair of jeans or jazzed up with a sexy slim belt for a trendy look. Designers like Tarun Tahiliani and Nida Mahmood showcased the sari in new avatars at the recently concluded Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week (WIFW) here. What's more, young girls are all for these innovative styles.

Kanika Rastogi, 19, says she was resisting the idea of wearing a sari for her sister's wedding for the fear of looking older until she saw models flaunting Tahiliani's saris with a belt. "I would never have thought of wearing a sari for my sister's wedding. I didn't want to look old. But when I saw models wearing saris with belts, I thought it would make me look really cool. So that's just what I am going to do now - save money by not buying an expensive lehenga and wear a sari stylishly instead," Rastogi told IANS.

When asked about his innovative accessorising of the traditional outfit, Tahiliani said: "Belts can be used over saris by slim and tall people. It accentuates the waist, looks sexy and adds style as well as youthfulness to the outfit."

The designer, who is making Bollywood actress Shilpa Shetty's wedding trousseau, says adding a silver or gold belt - a modern alternative to the good old 'kamarbandh' - over a sari also gives a Greek look to the attire. "The Indian and Greek styles of dressing are all about draping - and very similar. They usually wear waist bands over gowns so these belts work to add that extra bit of Indo-Western look to a sari," he said.

Young designer Nida Mahmood says it's the coolest thing to wear saris over jeans - a fashion statement she herself made at WIFW. "The idea of wearing saris over jeans is my interpretation of wearing a sari in a trendy manner. This is a trend that youngsters can follow for any casual party. It looks very good, especially if you are carrying the outfit with the right accessories and look," Mahmood told IANS.

Others like Jai-Parvesh and Hemant-Nandita also have suggestions to make. Both designer duos swear by pre-pleated and lehenga saris, which are easy to wear and carry at the same time. While pre-pleated saris are like skirts with pleats stitched on to them, lehenga saris have a flowing silhouette (kali) below, and has a heavy pallu replacing a well-draped dupatta on the left shoulder. Said Jai: "Young girls look for easy attires these days. With something like a pre-pleated sari or a lehenga sari, one doesn't need to be bothered about pleating a sari. You just have to slip in or tuck it at one place. That's what is attracting a lot of girls these days."

Twenty six-year-old Sonakshi Sharma seconded the idea. She said, "Who has the time and patience to visit a parlour each time before going to a wedding just to get a sari draped? So these sort of attires work well. Just wear it as if you are wearing a skirt - and you look decked up without much ado!"

Language: Malayalam

Namitha in Black Stallion
Sex queen Namitha has signed up to act in a Malayalam movie called "Black Stallion" and Namitha is paid 25 lakhs to perform in the sexy thriller. The undisputed glamor queen of Indian cinema Namitha is starring in a Malayalam movie for the first time. Kalabhavan Mani is playing the lead role in "Black Stallion" while actor Bala is performing a support role.
Namitha in Malayalam movie "Black Stallion"

25 lakhs is a lot of money and may be the highest paid in Malayalam industry for a heroine and Namitha will be squeezed every bit to do justice for her role. Black Stallion is produced by Jagadheesh Chandran under the banner of Kichu films; the script is by Rajesh Jayaraman.

Malayalam movie "Black Stallion" is an action thriller with six songs of course some of them will be spicy hot to utilize the full talent of Namitha in Mollywood style what a treat for viewers....mmmm... with lot of erotic scenes needed for a thriller movie. Namitha will be liberal in exposing her assets to her hard core fans as she is getting a hefty sum of money to do so. It is said that Namitha will be playing a bar girl dancing for men in skimpy clothes - what a role! absolutely fitting! Remember Namitha was caught in a blue film scandal last year when some videos and sexy pictures of Namitha changing dress in a caravan were supposedly released all over the internet. Namitha, south indian actress, denied the blue film rumors saying she never allowed any filming of her indoor activities.

I am sure the new Malayalam movie "Black Stallion" will be a must see for any Namitha fan - even though not sure about the entertainment value of the movie itself...but the director or producer will make sure to use the full talent of busty Namitha to the maximum extent.

t was way back in June 2008 when we had told you about the chartbusting potential and class of the audio album of the Karan Johar directed, Shahrukh Khan-Kajol starrer, MY NAME IS KHAN. We had broken the news about the scratch tunes of two background scores, one of which was then titled ''Sajda'' and was to be rendered by Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. Whether the title of the song has remained ''Sajda'' or not, is not confirmed but yes, our US based sources confirm that Rahat has indeed rendered the song and it has already been picturised on SRK and Kajol.

CHECK OUT: MY NAME IS KHAN creates a hurricane

In fact, a well known critic (print and broadcast media) who has recently seen the rushes of MNIK and also heard the songs was overwhelmed by what he saw and heard. He was all praises for the trio of Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy, the music composers of MY NAME IS KHAN.
Well, we are not surprised; keeping in mind the excellent audio track record of the SRK-Karan team and KUCH KUCH HOTA HAI, KABHI KHUSHI KABHIE GHAM, KAL HO NAA HO and KABHI ALVIDA NAA KEHNA are standout examples of that!
While still on MNIK, it is believed that Fox Studio has picked up the worldwide rights of the film for Rs. 100 crores.

t was way back in June 2008 when we had told you about the chartbusting potential and class of the audio album of the Karan Johar directed, Shahrukh Khan-Kajol starrer, MY NAME IS KHAN.

100 crores.

The Private Lives Of Pippa Lee Review 2009

Film details…
Classification:15
Director:Rebecca Miller
Cast:Robin Wright Penn, Alan Arkin, Blake Lively, Keanu Reeves, Winona Ryder, Julianne Moore, Monica Bellucci, Maria Bello

Adapted from her own novel, Rebecca Miller's star-studded fourth feature tells the story of a woman finding herself late in life. With Robin Wright Penn, Keanu Reeves and Julianne Moore
The very industrious Rebecca Miller, daughter of the late playwright Arthur Miller and wife to Daniel Day-Lewis, wrote the novel 'The Private Lives Of Pippa Lee', adapted it into a screenplay and directed the film. What emerges from this one-woman band isn't an introspective journey into one person's worldview but rather the opposite - a soft-focus, chocolate-box fairytale.

At around 50-years-old, with two grown-up children and nearly 30 years of married life behind her, the eponymous Pippa (Robin Wright Penn) is whisked away to a retirement community by her much older husband. Beginning from this excellent premise - what happens when the silver fox you bagged as a 20-year-old hottie becomes a geriatric burden, and you're still in the prime of life? - the film embarks on an attempt to discover what lies behind Pippa's perfect exterior.

The whole thing is vaguely reminiscent of post-war domestic dramas aimed at a daytime audience of housewives - like a photo-negative of Brief Encounter , as Pippa's unswerving devotion to her husband is rewarded with abandonment. Of course, things now aren't as they were then, so in place of the more visible repressions of previous generations, subtler pressures are at play.

Pippa, a well-tended trophy wife, is as well behaved as a trained pet. Her hidden hunger, anger and need are expressed in bouts of sleepwalking and sudden outbursts, which she apologises for like the absurdly overgrown good girl she is, with hand over mouth and wide eyes.
