Laetitia Darche was crowned Miss Mauritius 2010 on Saturday at the Mövenpick Resort & Spa Mauritius in Bel Ombre. Darche, will now represent the country in the Miss Universe 2011 and Miss World 2011
The first and second runners-up are Joëlle Nagapen and Gloriana Joseph respectively. The 40th edition of the Miss Mauritius contest continues to generate much interest and the year 2010 lived up to tradition.
The Mövenpick Hotels & Resorts was fully booked for the extravagant show that designated the successor to Dalysha Doorga, Miss Mauritius 2009.
The Krumania Dance Academy kicked off the evening on the tune of Shakira’s Waka Waka song. Dressed in swimsuits and sunglasses, the 14 finalists accompanied the dancers.
After the presentation of the jury members, the candidates reappeared on stage in the beautiful collection of Body & Soul. After another performance of the Krumania Dance Academy group, it was time for the 14 finalists to wear the dresses designed by the Fashion Design students of the University of Mauritius.
To mark the 40th year of the contest, a presentation of the former Miss Mauritius was held, including Anaïs Veerapatren, Magalie Antoo, Anita Ramgutty, Jacqueline Sauzier, Marie Anne Yip Tong and Florence Muller Masson, the first Miss Mauritius crowned in 1970, who specially came all the way from South Africa.
Four international beauty queens were also invited for the occasion, Miss China, Miss Kenya, Miss India and Miss Malaysia.
Lastly, the girls wore the collection of Ashiana fashion under the applause of the public and fans.
Anaïs Verapatren, Miss Mauritius 2008, performed on a song choreographed along with Georges Jacob. Then it was time for Vanessa Obeegadoo, deputy national director of Miss Mauritius, to unveil the names of the five finalists, namely Vania, Gloriana, Laetitia, Joëlle and Emily.
The ultimate challenge was for each Miss to answer a question.
Among the question include, ‘Woman is equal to man, if you are elected how would you bring your support?’, ‘What motivates girls to participate in the contest Miss Mauritius?’, and ‘If you had to present ecotourism Mauritius on a brochure, what would you choose?’.
