City of Gold - the story of long-forgotten masses (cotton mill workers), not only explores the apathy of these mill workers narrated through the story of one such family, but is also a take-no-prisoners account of the birth of the true underbelly of organised crime in Mumbai. The film traces the birth of the politics of greed in Mumbai and exposes the unholy collusion between the triumvirate of big business, the political establishment and the trade union leaders who ostensibly were charged with protecting the rights of the mill workers. In the two decades that followed, the entire landscape of Central Mumbai was changed forever.
City Of Gold Preview"2010 sees the return of Mahesh V Manjrekar as a director with ‘City of Gold’. The film is a take-no-prisoners account of the birth of the true underbelly and organized crime in Mumbai. Ripping apart the façade of the swanky malls and glittering multiplexes that dot the landscape of Central Mumbai, ‘City Of Gold’ takes the viewer through a heart-wrenching and violent journey of the trials and tribulations of those who had to sacrifice their all so that these monuments to consumerism could be built – The thousands of mill workers of the area.
Mahesh, who had taken a long (by industry standards) sabbatical from directing comes back with this hard-hitting movie that doesn’t just tell the story of these mill workers whose lives were changed forever as more and more mills closed down, it actually features some of their family members in their very first on screen appearances ever.The authenticity of their performances has supposedly challenged even such fine exponents of the craft of acting such as Seema Biswas and Satish Kaushik who appear in the movie alongside them.
‘City of Gold’ is also the first film produced by DAR Media, the content division of investment advisory and private equity firm, DAR Capital Group. It may be recalled that DAR was recently in the news for bagging the global theatrical and public venue rights for the Indian Premier League (IPL) for a period of 10 years.
